"Energy Efficiency Improvements in Tenements" by Edinburgh Napier University and Lanarkshire Housing Association

SUMMARY

The main focus of this study was to explore the possibilities of improving the energy efficiency of the apartment’s fabric and energy for space and water heating. The apartments in question are owned by Lanarkshire Housing Association and are located in the town of Bellshill near Motherwell. This feasibility study addressed options and elements in which the apartments can be thermally improved and to also explore the improvement of heating services which at present have become difficult to maintain and are costly for the tenant.

The housing association is concerned with the difficulties of tackling the new Scottish Housing Quality Standard requirements and they are aware that this involves addressing the aspects of energy efficiency particularly reducing heat conduction easily through the buildings fabric and also colder air filtrating into the tenements.

The aim of this study was to increase the thermal comfort of all tenants with the use of energy efficient methods that will not incur into excessive investment for the housing association. It was also a priority of this study to address the concerns raised on lowering fuel poverty. All of these can be partially solved by focusing on having more efficient ways of heating the dwellings while also making it easier to operate and thus make the tenants are aware of what they consume saving energy during operation.

The study involved a series of dynamic thermal simulations of typical tenement properties while also producing smaller studies with alternatives of energy consumption both from renewable and grid connected sources.

SPEAKERS

Julio Bros-Williamson BArch (Hon), MSc, Edinburgh Napier University

Julio is an architect educated in the Marista University in Mexico City. He has also obtained an MSc in Energy Efficient Building at Oxford Brookes University where he conducted research on Dynamic simulations related to thermal mass in walls and buildings.

Julio has been involved in projects & CPD courses within the Scottish Energy Centre related to Low and zero carbon technology, energy efficiency, sustainability and thermal testing of buildings. He also is a BREEAM commercial assessor and contributes as a consultant on sustainable building matters.

Current projects which he has been involved in cover the topics of: building in situ monitoring; the refurbishments of current stock and historic buildings, renewable energy feasibility studies and the integration of the PassivHaus standard for the retrofit of buildings.

Julio is currently a lecturer in the School of Arts and Creative Industries and lectures both in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Interior Architecture he also teaches on the MSc in Architectural Technology & Building Performance in the School of the Built Environment.

Gavin Young, Lanarkshire Housing Association

Gavin Young has been Technical Services Manager at Lanarkshire Housing Association in Motherwell since 2000, with responsibilities across new build housing development, regeneration projects, and planned maintenance and improvement work to existing stock. Since 2004 has been a Director of the Association’s subsidiary, established to carry out commercial development.

In recent years has led a range of projects dealing with energy efficiency, ranging from installation of new technology through large scale insulation projects, and a project to provide energy efficiency advice to all the Association’s tenants and other owners.
