Building Information Modelling (BIM) enables representation of building geometry, spatial relationships, light analysis, geographic information, quantities and properties of building components.  Data integrated into BIM can be used to analyse and present the entire building life cycle. Quantities and properties of materials can be extracted and the scope of works can be easily defined.

As these BIM features can facilitate the sustainability assessment of proposed designs and post-occupancy evaluation in relation to performance targets, the conference talks will demonstrate how this can be achieved.  Along with the use of BIM for new building designs, there is growing interest in its use for modelling existing buildings to facilitate renovation and refurbishment interventions.

As laser scanning and distance measuring can be used to create 3D models of existing buildings, the conference will present a related case study.  Populating a 3D model of an existing building with data that will assist decision making on renovation options is a challenge in further development of BIM.

The conference will indicate issues that need to be addressed to develop BIM for refurbishment
